The Diary of a Nobody – Thu 5/17/18

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Wednesday, May 17
I was supposed to enjoy today off with The Wife…We were going to really clean the house and fart around in the yard, but she and some others were dispatched for emergency duty with a branch of the retailer in the big city, so I was on my own today…So of course, I went out to lunch and it was a dilemma choosing where…On the one hand, I really craved the Mexican joint in the next county…On the other hand, I really did not want to leave our small town today.

Influencing the decision was the fact I got the cat the dry food we were out of before heading home Wednesday night…Had I not, going to the next county would have been the obvious choice because I could have gone to the retailer there and picked up her dry food…As it was, it made the decision to stay in town easy…I had a cheese log and a burger at the diner…I could’ve sworn I had ordered onion rings as my side, but when french fries came instead I didn’t say anything…One, I wasn’t entirely sure what I’d ordered…Could’ve been fries…I mean, I didn’t write my choice down (neither did the waitress, for that matter) and besides, I chose because I had to…It didn’t really matter…Both are equally good.

The cheese log is a very simple appetizer: some pizza dough rolled over with some mozzarella inside…It is really good and today was better than usual, which is good for small town, day off morale…I told the new owner, Todd, to send a sainthood application into Rome for his cook as I was heading and he laffed and we chatted a bit…He thanked me for coming in and I noted that I had seen him limping and he nodded and said he was fighting a case of gout.

Needless to say, I wore my new pants to lunch, continuing their introductory tour around town…I actually went to the market first to get some bread and some jam, so ol’ Sparrow was able to kill two birds with one stone…The house brand of bread there, Farm Bread, is really good, as good as any leading national brand, and it is still less than three bucks, my preferred price for a loaf of bread….I sneak a loaf whenever I can…The Wife is still on her gluten-free bread kick, but she’s gone for four days, so good luck stopping me….Rye is my preferred type, tho their whole wheat is good, too.

Putzed around the yard today, too, to include filling the bird feeder…We are about halfway thru the 40-pound bag of premium bird seed The Wife got on sale a while back…After filling the feeder I went and watered the plants and the gardens and even hand watered Quadrant A, Sector 1, which fronts Maple Street and is immediately out the front door and adjacent to the driveway…When I was walking back around the house to turn the water off I noticed something strange:

A small bird was stuck inside of the bird feeder!!!

I am not making that up!!!…I had to look twice to make sure I was seeing it right, too…I was…It was plainly trying to get out but it had no idea how…Of course, I let it out, and it immediately flew to a nearby tree, where it perched and recovered from its incarceration.

The birds, and squirrels, are really eating their fill…I filled it up about three-quarters mid-morning or so and by nightfall it was almost all gone.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 2030 Wednesday night until 0815 Thursday morning…Slept fitfully, honestly…I was up to use the can a couple of times and around 0230 I was up because I’d left the windows open and nights are still chilly and I was cold…So I shut them and used the bathroom and even turned the heat on for good measure…Still tho, woke up refreshed.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th century British novel of the same name.
