In 1899 – The Oklahoma Land Rush begins, with the towns of Oklahoma City and Guthrie being formed with populations greater than 10,000 by the end of the day. The rush began with the shooting of a gun with 50,000 people lined up at Fort Reno – near Oklahoma City – to claim land that had been taken from the Indians. Oklahoma would become the 46th state in the Union in 1907.
In 1994 – Michael Moorer wins the WBA and IBF world heavyweight titles, winning a 12-round majority decision in Las Vegas. Moorer won on two judges’ scorecards, with the third judging the fight a draw. It was the second world heavyweight title for Moorer, who would lose the belt to George Foreman in November. Holyfield retired a few days later after a stay in the hospital, though he would later regain the world heavyweight title.
In 1978 – The Bee Gees are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the sixth of eight consecutive weeks with Night Fever. The song also went to #1 in five other countries, including Spain, Ireland, and Great Britain, peaked at #8 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s 2nd-biggest song of the year. It was the third of six consecutive #1 songs for the group, tying a mark established by the Beatles and later broken by Whitney Houston with seven. It was the sixth of nine #1 songs overall for the group.
