The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow fields a knotty problem at the hotel. Today’s Diary.

We pursed our lips and considered the matter at length…Had we been standing, we would’ve had our hands on our hips, but it’s tuff to put your hands on your hips when you’re sitting in a desk chair…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1918 – The Red Baron, Capt. Manfred von Richthofen of the German Air Force, the greatest fighting ace of World War I, is killed during air combat in northern France. Von Richthofen had been credited with 80 kills during the war, earning him hero status in Germany and the respect of his enemies. Exactly who fired the shot that pierced von Richthofen in the chest is not known, though it is suspected he died from ground fire and not air fire.

In 1900 – The Chicago White Sox – then the White Stockings – play their first game, a 5-4 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in the then-minor American League at Schorling’s Park in Chicago. The White Stockings would finish first in the AL that season, and the following season the American League declared itself a major league. To date, the White Sox have an all-time record of 9,598-9,628-103 and have won three World Series. Schorling’s Park would later be known as Southside Park and was located a couple of blocks south of where the White Sox play now.

In 1974 – MFSB featuring the Three Degrees are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 with TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia). It was the first chart single and only Top 40 hit for MFSB and the second of three Top 40 hits for the Three Degrees, and remains the only #1 song for both. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #22 in Great Britain, was in its only week at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s seventh biggest song of the year. The song also won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.
