In 1111 – Henry V is crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Paschal II. Henry had been made co-emperor with his father Henry IV, in 1098, and he forced his dad to abdicate in 1105. Henry worked to secure his throne, which included kidnapping Paschal until he enthroned him. Henry reigned until his death in 1125, and his bones and bowels are buried in different places. His successor, Lothair III, did not assume the throne until 1133.
In 1987 – The San Diego Padres establish a new major league record for most home runs at the start of a game in a 13-6 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The Padres hit three home runs, breaking the record of two which had been done many times previously, and the feat has been done three times since. The home runs were hit by Marvel Wynne, Tony Gwynn, and John Kruk and were hit off Roger Mason. The fourth batter, Steve Garvey, flew out to center field.
In 1957 – Elvis Presley is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart – a predecessor to the Hot 100 – with All Shook Up. The song also went to #1 in Canada and Great Britain and on Billboard country and soul charts, making Elvis, along with the Everly Brothers, the only acts to have the same song go to #1 on all three major Billboard charts and both did it multiple times. It was the seventh of 18 #1 songs for Elvis on a Billboard pop chart.
