In 1979 – British Prime Minister George Callahan loses a no-confidence vote in the House of Commons. The vote was 311-310, with eleven not voting for various reasons and with three seats vacant. The loss forced the government to either resign or petition Queen Elizabeth II to dissolve Parliament and force an election. Parliament was dissolved two days later and a May election brought Margaret Thatcher to power.
In 1999 – Patrick Roy of the Colorado Avalanche establishes a new NHL record for most career regular season and playoff wins in a 7-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings. It was the 509th career win for Roy, breaking the record of 508 established by Jaques Plante from 1952-73. Roy retired in 2003 with 702 victories and the mark is now 804 by Martin Brodeur.
In 1987 – Club Nouveau is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with Lean On Me. The song also went to #1 in Canada and New Zealand, peaked at #3 in Great Britain, and at #2 on Billboard’s soul chart. In 1972 Bill Withers’ version also went to #1, making it the fifth of nine songs to go to #1 for different artists. It was the first of two chart singles for the group and remains their only Top 10 hit.
