Notes from around the human experience.
FLY IN THE OINTMENT: We recently had to put our beloved cat down. The usual feelings attended this. She was sick and weighed four-and-half pounds, and there was no reason for her to suffer anymore.
Dry, Technical Matter: The vet injected something or other into her and she was dead within a few seconds. As far as is humanly known, her death was painless.
Here We Go: This got us thinking: what human facing a painful, terminal end should not be entitled to a swift, painless end? Currently, physician-assisted is legal in eleven states. This means it is not legal in 39 states. Worldwide, it’s legal in ten countries.
Get Your Official Daily Dose Policy Right Here: It should be legal everywhere. Why should a physically suffering, mentally competent person not be allowed to legally get some help in ending a life that is beyond tolerance?
Here We Go II: If your religious beliefs or personal moral code forbid assisted suicide, don’t kill yourself and, by all means, decline invitations to help someone requesting it. If you choose to live your life out to its natural end, more power to you. If you’re a doctor who is not comfortable helping someone die, yay for you. You are a professional free to offer whatever services to the public you want.
The Bottom Line: We understand it is human nature to want to keep living as long as possible and to want that for others. After all, we only have one life and it seems perverse to end it unnaturally. However, when someone only has pain, physical incapacity, and, perhaps, embarrassment to look forward to, it is wrong to deny them a legal, assisted death. Those opposed to it do not have to take part.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow gets off a funny. Today’s Diary.
Like a lot of things, this is neither completely true nor completely false, and it was funny and was delivered with typical Sparrow precision, and the gal there gave it a decent, if not great, laff…

Extra, extra, read all about it.
In 1921 – Former President of the United States William Howard Taft is sworn in as chief justice of the United States. Taft presided over a generally conservative court that was able to determine its workload following the passage of the Judicial Act of 1925. Taft served until 1930, when he resigned a month before his death. Taft was president from 1909-13 and remains the only person to hold both positions.
In 1976 – JoAnne Carner wins the US Women’s Open, shooting a 5-over 76 to defeat defending champion Sandra Palmer in an 18-hole playoff. It was the second US Open title for Carner and these remain her only two LPGA major wins. Previously, Carner had won the US Girl’s Junior and US Women’s Amateur titles and was the first person to win three USGA individual titles. The others to do it are Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Hall of Fame amateur Carol Semple.
In 1981 – Earl Thomas Conley is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with Fire and Smoke. It was the second of 22 Top 10 country hits for Conley, his first of 18 #1s, and was Billboard’s #1 country song of the year. The song spent 19 weeks in the survey, including 14 weeks in the Top 40 and seven weeks in the Top 10, figures that are rather high for the era.
Some Philosophy Crap
The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.
…to read one’s own heart and mind in solitary contemplation seemed to him to promise more wisdom than all objects and all books.
