In 1987 – The USS Stark, – a guided missile frigate – is attacked in the Persian Gulf when an Iraqi fighter jet fired two missiles into her. The aircraft ignored warnings from the Stark to identify itself and fired missiles from 22 and 15 miles away. The attack killed 37 sailors and injured 21. Iraq apologized and claimed the pilot thought the Stark was an Iranian freighter. The Stark was repaired in Bahrain before returning to the US.
In 1998 – Se Ri Pak of South Korea wins the LPGA Championship at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware, shooting a final-round 68 to defeat Donna Andrews and Lisa Hackney by three strokes. It as the first of three LPGA Championship wins for Pak and her first of five major victories. Pak retired after the 2015 season with 25 LPGA tour wins and was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2007.
In 1969 – The Broadway cast album from the musical Hair is at #1 on Billboard’s album chart – then known as the Top LPs chart – for the fourth of 13 consecutive weeks. Though the album did not produce any chart singles, a medley of two songs from the album, Aquarius and Let The Sun Shine In by the 5th Dimension, was in its 6th and final week at #1 on the Hot 100. The album also went to #2 in Australia, and it remains the last Broadway cast album to go to #1 on the Billboard album chart.
