The Diary of a Nobody/May 4

Yay for Read Free Sunday at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, May 4
The AGM was at the hotel when we reported for duty tonight, and he had several things to turn over.

First, there were a lot of drunks in-house…Occupancy was the highest it’s been in several weeks and, evidently, our guests felt like celebrating this because the AGM said a dozen or guests left the bar at closing time and none of them were sober…He went out of his way to tell me none of them were belligerent because he remembers me getting assaulted as well as I do…Recall the guy was stupid drunk and should have been cut off but he wasn’t and my request that this be taken up with the goddamn idiots at the restaurant was taken seriously.

Those drunks led to other turnover items: one had his hoodie stolen at the outdoor hot tub, and another reported he saw a domestic dispute (DD) in 145, which could mean he just happened to see it walking past the window while he was in the parking lot or it could mean he was a peeping Tom standing post.

The AGM, as he should, took this seriously…He called the room, which is silly because no one is going to admit to smacking around his woman over the phone, and followed that up with a visit, which is appropriate…He said there was no evidence of a DD, but he didn’t get visual on the woman, which could mean either she fled, the guy stuffed her under the bed, or the drunk was, well, a drunk and didn’t see what he thought he saw…We made a couple of passes thru the night and didn’t hear anything.

The AGM then got chatting with an arrival about fishing…The guest said he was going fishing in the morning, and the AGM said he was too, and it turned out they were both going to the same reservoir south of here…Then it got boring, as they started talking about times and locations and whatnot (the AGM is fishing at a private fishing hole, while the guest must make do fishing with the masses), with the AGM noting that if it’s below 45 up here it is probably barely above freezing there and it might be best to wait…Also, there was a blizzard here in town, which might keep the fish from biting, tho the discussion wasn’t technical enuff to cover why, not that we particularly cared anyway.

Following one hell of a rest (see Sleep Log below), we had really good strength in the gym…And, odd for a Saturday evening, we had it all to ourselves most of the way, too…Mo and another kid showed up about halfway thru, but we managed to stay out of each other’s way.

Recall Mo is the county’s emergency services director…He worked 25 hours a day during The Virus Era, but without a national calamity he is now relegated to forwarding National Weather Service emails calling for a chance of scattered showers to county employees…We run into each other occasionally, and he’s a former Marine officer who still has That Look, so we generally just say howdy and don’t otherwise bother him.

And the lawn is done!!!

I am not making that up.

This must be considered an upset because plans were to keep putting it off until it got a national forest designation, but at the gym we saw our buddy Tim out mowing his yard…Tim lives across the street from the gym and his house is visible across Main Street from the cardio room and if he’s out there, then it’s official, the “all clear” for mowing has been issued…Recall we’ve had snow, rain, and cold since before we left on vacation as winter chose to stick around and we thought prudence dictated putting it off, but it was a warm day and there was plenty of daylite left and to defer it until later would be lazy even by our standards.

The lawn remains an eclectic combination of weeds, whole grains, and grasses, and we were able to get the whole thing done without the battery dying on us, which regular readers of this crap may – or they may not – recall wasn’t always the case last summer when the battery died after only three-quarters of the yard was done the two or three mowings…We were motivated today, tho…We were feeling strong after workout and we didn’t dawdle, moving pretty well the whole time…We overcame every excuse we could offer – and there were a lot – for putting it off yet again and while we whined most of the way, it was a good feeling of accomplishment afterward.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0930 Saturday until 1630 Saturday…7.0 hours for the day and an in-on-time 50.0 hours for the week.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
