The Diary of a Nobody/January 10

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Wednesday, January 10
The Front Desk Supervisor (FDS) was there tonite, and right when we got there Mike, the restaurant manager came by with the last of the day’s receipts…We thanked him for not stapling things together, and for the general reduction in staple use from other servers, too…There is one holdout – and the FDS knew who it was, too, which is either good or scary, we’re not sure which – but one stapler when there used to be several is no problemo.

We then rolled right into how Gabby was the only one who submitted her credit card receipts batched by type, but she seldom serves anymore and everyone else stacks them randomly…The FDS, tho – and this was sort of funny – showed me a palm and shoved this vital matter aside so he and Mike could have a rather technical (re: boring) discussion about the recent habit those zany servers have gotten into: the stapling of receipts to the various coupons we issue…(This is OK, because we don’t have to remove the staples.)…This conversation was necessary because some staple the receipt to the front of the coupon, while others staple them to the back…We received no instruction in the matter and we are happy to leave them on wherever they were put…For his part, the FDS allowed he would prefer they’re attached to the front, with Mike nodding solemnly, tho he didn’t commit to anything.

The final airline crew of the nite didn’t arrive until twenty minutes into the shift…We were curious about where their days had begun and whatnot – they should’ve been in hours earlier – but we’ve learned they don’t really care to talk shop, so we didn’t bother…A bit before they arrived the airline called needing an extra room and they got lucky: tho sold out, one of those paid in advance no-shows was still checked in to 148, so we moved her to a house account and put the new flight attendant in there…This was a bit of a risk because our contract with the airline calls for second-floor rooms, but this may well have been the only vacant room in town and we made a note in the reservation noting it had been a last-minute reservation.

After no-showing yesterday, Dray the Dairy Delivery Driver (D4), was by while we were setting up Morning Coffee Service (MCS)…Actually, D4 advised he was by last nite, around 0100, but the door to the back office was locked and ol’ Sparrow was nowhere to be found and we told him we were probably out walking the hotel…Because we asked, he noted he had been out that early because he has access to a couple of restaurants and, as it happened, his truck broke down and he was obliged to stay another nite.

The weekly state veterans service officer (VSO) Zoom session was useful, tho not particularly interesting…It was noted that April’s spring conference (on a Thursday and Friday) will be all virtual – nothing will be in person – because the national VSO association annual convention will be in the big city in May, and they want as many people as possible to be able to afford to go, not too bad a strategy, actually…Marshall, the county VSO association president, also announced that national wants to increase dues to $500 a year, which is insane…So insane we thought we’d heard incorrectly because we really weren’t paying that close attention, but we’d heard right…We don’t know what dues are now because we’re not members of either association, but $500 is a lot for either an individual or a county to afford.

Tommy stopped by…Longtime readers of this crap may, or they may not, recall we helped him find a place to live a couple of years ago…(Some research showed it was actually 18 months)…This came after he showed up on a Friday afternoon when he had to vacate his apartment by Monday…He still hasn’t made much improvement on the notification front, announcing his rent – already subsidized by VOA – is going up to $1,700 and that his contribution will go up from $400 a month to $850 a month…Could I help???…Maybe, maybe not…With Liz’s help, we came up with a couple of Federal voucher programs but these will take time to come to fruition, if they do at all.

Speaking of clients those keeping score at home may or may not remember, we had a message from Glenn waiting for us…Those who do remember him will not regard it as the Upset of the Year to find out his message was longwinded and rambling…He is currently in the state north of here but wants to come back here who knows what else and we really couldn’t see a reason for his call…We didn’t really want to call him back without a mental health professional standing by, and got off easy by leaving a message that, fortunately, wasn’t returned.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: As usual for Wednesday, there is not any sleep to report today.

———

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
