Notes from around our human experience.

GOP! GOP! GOP! Recently Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley was asked by a voter in Iowa if she would call Donald Trump a “grave danger” to our country. Haley declined to do that.

Can We Call A Spade A Spade, Please: We have never understood anyone’s reticence to call Trump what he really is: a lying sexual predator who believes the moon is part of Mars. And that the American Revolution was won by the Continental Army securing British airports. All of these things are true, but few are willing to say so publicly.

Dry, Technical Matter: And while Trump is a lousy human being and was a lousy president, the gravest danger to America is the ignorance that made him a thing in the first place. The blame for this falls squarely on the shoulders of the American media, with the American public aidors and abettors because we tolerated it.

Ladies And Gentlemen Of The Jury: Could you imagine an American media paced by Woodward and Bernstein, Walter Cronkite, John Chancellor, or any one of a dozen other journalists of the era allowing Trump into the primaries? Of course you couldn’t. They would’ve have exposed his utter lack of qualifications and the American public would’ve embraced it.

Back To The Future: In 2016, though, Trump meant ratings and clicks so, despite being a blatherskite whose only goal is to draw attention to himself, Trump was ushered straight into the primaries and, of course, the presidency.

The Bottom Line: We will always get the government we deserve and tolerate, so as long as we tolerate those who are ignorant and who lie and prattle nonsense, we will continue to get them. The blame for Donald Trump looks us in the mirror every morning.

It’s sounding pretty good right now – and there would be no reason not to get some of those biscuits that come in a tin, too – but that’s a lot of work to put into feeding me…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1968 – The 83-member crew of the USS Pueblo, a US spy ship, are released from North Korean captivity. The Pueblo had been captured in January while on a mission to spy on Soviet naval activity in the area in addition to gathering electronic intelligence on North Korea. The Pueblo remains in commissioned US service – the second oldest commissioned vessel behind the Constitution –  and is still held by North Korea.

In 1980 – The Winnipeg Jets end their NHL-record winless streak in a 5-4 win over the Colorado Rockies. The Jets had gone winless in their last 30 games (0-23-7), breaking the record of 27 by the Kansas City Scouts in 1975-76. It was the Jets’ first win since October 17 and they finished the season with nine victories, the fewest wins in an 80-game season since the Washington Capitals won eight games in 1974-15.

In 1979 – Chic is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of six non-consecutive weeks with Le Freak. The song also went to #1 in four other countries, including South Africa, peaked at #7 in Great Britian, was in its fourth of five consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s 3rd-biggest song of the year. It was the second of four Top Ten pop hits for the group and their first of two #1s.
