It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Friday, August 25
It was another good workout in the gym this morning but, boy, we’re wondering when we’ll get another +1 workout in…We had another good rest (see Sleep Log below) and were feeling good but regular strength is all that’s been there lately…We’re not complaining about this, of course, merely noting it because as long as the 10th rep on the last set is failure, we’re doing our workout regardless of whatever weight we happen to be moving.
Kellen, who coaches our Legion post’s baseball team and who conned me into umpiring a little this summer made an appearance in the sauna at the in-town gym (ITG) this morning, as he does from time to time…Somehow me growing up in LA got brought up and that interested Kellen, who grew up in New England and we said we had no complaints with our upbringing tho, of course, it was all we knew and had nothing to compare it to…We noted we sometimes saw Merlin Olsen at the supermarket and Kellen’s young enuff not to know who Merlin Olsen was, tho he had heard of the LA Rams, of course, and my Father Murphy reference, made in the spirit of helpfulness, didn’t clarify matters at all.
It was a complete strikeout on the chick front at the ITG, too…Marion, the Friday Biddy, wasn’t there and neither was Madam Public Health Director…The luscious Mandy was there to teach her 0700 AquaFit class, but she’s been ignoring me ever since she accepted a dinner invitation from me and, of course, we didn’t see Jackie, and haven’t since she decided she’d rather go out with her husband than me…Still tho, a long sauna and a soak is a great follow-up to yesterday’s strong day off and, of course, the less chick clutter (CC) in my life, the better.
It was dead slow at the veterans service office (VSO) today…We did talk with Rick, the vet who’s staying at the hotel and he said he found a place and will move in Tuesday…Good, because if he didn’t find something soon and VOA couldn’t put him up any more then he was out of luck because we didn’t have any other options for him…Recall we had paid for most of his stay at the hotel and the old adage that no good deed goes unpunished may be applicable here because we have been unable to pass off the cost of his room at the hotel off on anyone because three charities and two churches have all passed on the opportunity to help…We don’t understand this, but we really don’t have an answer to “no” and we should probably look into whether or not we can declare this a charitable contribution because it will take Rick forever to pay me off…Offhand, we tend to doubt it, but we’ll look into it.
Our annual state VSO training is next month, in the big city…Longtime readers of this crap know we’ve attended in person from time to time, but we have to take PTO from the hotel to do that and, 1) we’re out of PTO for the year and, 2) we’ve decided taking PTO from one job to attend training for another is whack and we’re not going to do it anymore…So we will attend virtually, as we can, consistent with getting some sleep…Recall last year we attended in person and came away thinking it might be fun to take some PTO and take the training virtually in Sin City, and we probably would if we had the PTO, so maybe next year.
The latest problem with the new county building concerns the elevator and it was serious enuff that Facilities Joe shot everyone an email on the matter…Evidently, there are problems with getting the elevator ready to accept our keycards to get it to work…I’ve seen this feature in the hotel at Casinoville, and it’s a nice security procedure…When it works, which it isn’t now…The plan, when it does work, is to have card access to the top-secret basement at all times and for all floors after working hours…The contractor working on the matter could be heard shuffling in and out all day and – because everyone can hear everything in the building – even violating the Second Commandment on occasion by using the name of the human form of the Holy Trinity in a manner inconsistent with praise.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
1630 Thursday until 0030 Friday
1730 Friday until 2130 Friday.
12.0 hours for the day and a robust 45 hours for the week, a wonderful figure heading into Saturday’s finale…Hell, some keeping score at home might – or they might not – remember the time when 45 hours was about our weekly average.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
