Writing worth reading. Usually.

The Diary of a Nobody – A gaggle of high school kids invades the hot spring Sparrow was sitting quietly in. Today’s Diary.

Then another buddy who happened to be lifeguarding at the time came over with some new talking points, specifically, some girl they know who evidently puts out coming down with the clap, and then all of them wondering what the highest any of them has been.

The Bottom Ten/NFL Week 9 – It’s Detroit, Houston, and Jacksonville on the Bottom Ten medal stand as the race for The Dan Henning Trophy rolls on.

Lions know better than anyone that you cannot afford to get complacent against Dolphins squad that has lost three (3) of last four (4)…

Early, tragic two (2)-game win streak safely in rearview mirror now as Jaguars current four (4)-game skid tied for best in NFL…

Browns so bad they are even looking to flex-schedule next game out prime time Monday night slot…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1825 – The Erie Canal, connecting the Hudson River in eastern New York with Lake Erie, opens. At 363 miles, it was then the second-longest canal in the world behind the Grand Canal in China. Construction began in 1817 and was an even bigger challenge due to the lack of civil engineers in the US and cost $7.1 million, about $171 million in today’s money. The canal, now the seventh longest in the world, is still open and mainly used for recreational travel now.

In 1997 – The Florida Marlins win their first World Series, defeating the Cleveland Indians 3-2 in eleven innings in game seven. It was the first of two World Series wins for the Marlins (2003) and the third of four World Series losses for the Indians. Florida had tied the game in with a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning and won it on a single by Edgar Renteria. The teams are now known as the Miami Marlins and the Cleveland Guardians.

In 1959 – Bobby Darin is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the fourth of nine non-consecutive weeks with Mack the Knife. It was the sixth of 21 Top 40 hits for Darin and remains his only #1 in a chart career that lasted from 1958-73. The song also went to #1 in Great Britain, peaked at #6 on Billboard’s soul chart, and ranked 3rd on Billboard’s 60th-Anniversary Hot 100 in 2018. The song was written in 1928 and Mack is based on a character from an 18th-century opera who was based on real-life English thief Jack Sheppard.
