In 1986 – Patrick Sherrill, a postal worker in Edmund, Oklahoma, shoots and kills 14 co-workers in the first of several post office shootings in the US. Six others were injured and after his rampage, Sherrill shot himself. Sherrill, a former Marine, was a relief mail carrier who often worked different routes and the day before had been reprimanded by supervisors. It remains the deadliest workplace shooting in US history.
In 1888 – Palmer Presby and TS Tailer establish the record for the longest match at the US Open in a 19-21, 8-6, 6-1, 6-4 Presby opening round win. Research into whose record they broke was inconclusive and the 80 games established a mark that stood until 1966 when a doubles match went 105 games, a mark that was tied in 1967. The longest US Open singles match is 100 games between Franklin Robbins and Donald Dell in 1969 and the longest ever match is 183 games between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut, at Wimbledon in 2010.
In 1966 – The Lovin’ Spoonful is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of three consecutive weeks with Summer in the City. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #6 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 35th biggest song of the year. It was the fifth of seven Top 10 hits for the group and remains their only #1 song. In 1973 a version by Quincy Jones peaked at #30 on the Adult Contemporary chart and won the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement.
