It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

After shocking us all with green ink for the signature on his cash drawer spreadsheet (CDSS) last week, Mark was back to basics tonite with his usual purple ink and pink highlighter for the day, date, time, amounts, and the marketing logo-ish slash thru his name…For his part, Chris kept his CDSS pretty standard, too, using green ink for his initials – it appears Chris is his middle name – and green highlighter tho, of course, he only highlights the amounts and there is no slash thru his initials.
We are really low on five-dollar bills…The left cash drawer is OK, it has 20 fivers, but the right cash drawer and the safe have five each, a desperately low total because fives are second only to ones for cash drawer usefulness (CDU)…It’s been this way all week, too, and why no one has gone to the bank for a change order is not immediately clear.
We ended up being one room shy of a sellout…We were sold out – actually, those keeping score at home may, or they may not, recall we were actually overbooked for today – until right as we reported for duty…The phone rang and we were working our way to the back office and didn’t hear what happened, but Mark said oopsies, we were sold out, but that lady just canceled, and apparently Mark let her do so without penalty, which is nicer than we would’ve been, unless she sounded hot, then we would have let her off.
There was no dawdling tonite, and we weren’t bothered and we were back from walking the hotel a bit after midnite a hell of a time…The big news is the hallway remodeling is almost all done…The room wings are all done except for a sign or two that needs to be put up and all that remains is the wallpapering in the stairwell and an area off the lobby…The lobby remodeling that was scheduled for this past spring has, reportedly, been put off until fall.
In security news, the door to the back office, more or less across from the entrance to the restaurant – isn’t closing all the way…It’s one of those doors that lock automatically when it shuts and has one of those push-button combination locks out front…This really isn’t that big a concern because we’re located in a nice small town and seldom need to hide from people (my February assault notwithstanding, of course) and, frankly, the only worry is we’d have to hide from a wayward bear that finds itself in the lobby…Longtime readers of this crap know, however, that we’ve established bears don’t activate the automatic doors…We have first-hand experience here watching with a mixture of terror and rather strong curiosity when we saw a bear out front once.
Chaos, and perhaps catastrophe, were averted at the veterans service office (VSO)…Recall we recently made arrangements for Joe to transport a vet named Dave to the VA hospital in the big city today…It was the deal where Dave might be coming back tonite or he might be held over for Thursday surgery, in which case he would need a ride back Friday…The pick-up went off without a hitch (at the hotel no less!) but then Joe calls and wonders who is taking Dave him home today???
Crap, I thought he was but he insisted he made it clear from the start that he could only provide a ride out, which we didn’t recall at all because if we had we would have found someone who could also’ve brought him back today…Later they call back and we decide on Plan C, he stays the nite in the big city if he is not held over for surgery and ol’ Sparrow will zip out and pick him up Thursday…That’s our day off, of course, but we can easily transfer that to Friday.
And we still don’t have a driver if he is coming back Friday…The vet transportation service at the big city VA hospital didn’t make contact with him and the DAV guy called me and we left a message for him, but never heard back…This isn’t that big a deal, either, because we could go out Friday if needed, too.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log: After last week’s aberration it was back to normal, and there isn’t any sleep to report for today.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
Coming soon! Gaylon’s books in actual book form!
