History’s long march.
In 1867 – The nation of Canada comes into existence when the British provinces of Canada (present-day Quebec and Ontario) New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia are joined following the passage of the Constitution Act of 1867. Sir John McDonald is sworn in as the country’s first prime minister and July 1 remains Canada’s national holiday. Today Canada has ten provinces and three territories, extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans and from the American border to the Arctic Ocean, and is the second-largest country in the world by size.
In 1910 – Comiskey Park in Chicago opens with a 2-0 win by the St Louis Browns over the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox would get their first win at their new home the following day and the stadium closed in 1990, its final game a 2-1 White Sox win over the Seattle Mariners. All told, the White Sox had a 3,326-2,889 regular-season record there and Comiskey Park hosted the World Series in 1917, 1919, and 1959. Previously, the White Sox had played at South Side Park and in 1968 and 1969 played some home games at Milwaukee’s County Stadium.
In 1989 – Milli Vanilli is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Baby Don’t Forget My Number. It was the second of five chart singles for the group, their second of five Top 10s, their first of three #1 songs, and the song also peaked at #16 in Great Britain and at #9 on Billboard’s soul chart. Later in the year, it was discovered that the front men for the German duo hadn’t actually done the singing and the duo returned their 1990 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The real singers for Milli Vanilli were Americans Brad Howell and John Davis.

Lost in the cacophony of Oprah and O.J. are those classical values that once made a Saturday afternoon track meet so appealing. Of running for the love of competition, of throwing a javelin for applause and an olive wreath. Of sweating for hours on a lonesome track at dusk for the chance of maybe one day hearing the anthem. Of honor and glory and the spirit of victory, not the spoils.
