History’s long march.
In 1963 – Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc sets himself on fire in Saigon – now Ho Chi Ming City – to protest religious repression in South Vietnam. Quang Duc had a led procession to an intersection near the Cambodian embassy, sat down, and was doused with gasoline by another monk. He then lit a match and burned to death. Quan Duc’s heart did not burn, either during the self-immolation or a following cremation, is considered holy, and is on display in a glass chalice in Ho Chi Minh City pagoda.
In 1938 – Johnny Vander Meer of the Cincinnati Reds pitches the first of two consecutive no-hitters in a 3-0 win over the Boston Bees in Cincinnati. Vander Meer walked three and struck out four in the game and on June 15th no-hit the Brooklyn Dodgers in the first night game played at Ebbets Field. Vander Meer had given up a hit in the last inning of his previous game and did not give up a hit until the fourth inning for his June 19th start against the Bees, and his streak of 22 consecutive hitless innings remains second behind Cy Young’s 25, done in 1904. The feat of consecutive no-hitters remains unmatched.
In 1988 – George Michael is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the third and final consecutive week with One More Try. It was the seventh of 18 Top 40 and 16 Top 10 hits for Michael as a solo act and was his fifth of eight #1 songs. The song also went to #1 in Ireland and Canada, peaked at #8 in Great Britain, and would later spend a week at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart. Previously, Michael had hit #1 three times as a member of the group Wham!.
Some Philosophy Crap
The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.
As he burned he never moved a muscle, never uttered a sound, his outward composure in sharp contrast to the wailing people around him.
