History’s long march.

In 1430 – French heroine Joan of Arc is captured by Burgundian troops at the Siege of Compiegne in northern France in the Hundred Years War. Joan had been part of the French army for a year and was soon transferred to the English. She was put on trial the following January, was convicted on one count of heresy, and was burned at the stake in May. Joan’s conviction was overturned 15 years later, too late to do her any good, and she was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1920.

In 1890 – The New York Giants establish a new National League record for most stolen bases in a game in a 17-10 win over the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. The Giants stole 17 bases, research into whose record they broke was inconclusive, and the Pirates stole three bases with the 20 combined stolen bases remaining the combined National League record. The all-time major league record was established the month before when the Philadelphia Athletics (American Association) stole 19 bases against the Syracuse Stars, and their combined 21 steals is also the all-time major league record.

In 1970 – The Guess Who is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third and final consecutive week with American Woman. It was the second six Top 10 hits for the group, remains their only #1 song, and the song also went to #1 in Canada and was Billboard’s third-biggest song of the year. The song was written by the band at a concert, the lyrics and tune improvised as a member replaced a string on a guitar. The flip side of the record, No Sugar Tonight, also charted and the record is considered a double-sided hit.

Some Philosophy Crap
The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.

Victory awaits him who has everything in order – luck, people call it. Defeat is certain for him who has neglected to take the necessary precautions in time; this is called bad luck.
Roald Amundsen
