History’s long march.
In 1942 – President Franklin D Roosevelt signs Executive Order 9066, allowing for the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. Eventually, ten camps were established from Arkansas to California, holding approximately 120,00 Japanese, over two-thirds of which were American citizens. A Supreme Court decision led to Roosevelt suspending the order in 1944 and while the camps were shut down by 1946, Executive Order 9066 was not formally terminated until a proclamation by President Gerald Ford in 1976.
In 1984 – The Soviet Union clinches the ice hockey gold medal at the Sarajevo Winter Olympics, defeating Czechoslovakia 2-0 in the final game of medal round play. The Soviets finished the round 3-0 and Sweden defeated Canada for the bronze medal. It was the sixth of seven ice hockey gold medals for the Soviets, who also won under the Unified Team and Olympic Athletes from Russia banners. The US defeated Poland 7-4 in the 7th-place game.
In 1994 – Celine Dion is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of four consecutive weeks with The Power of Love. The song also went to #1 in Canada and Australia, peaked at #4 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 4th-biggest song of the year. It was the fourth of nine Top 10 hits for Dion and her first of four #1 songs. The song spent 16 weeks in the Top 10 and twelve weeks in the Top 5 and had previously been hits for Jennifer Rush, Laura Branigan, and Air Supply.
