History’s long march.
In 1917 – The Immigration Act of 1917 becomes law when Congress overrides the veto or President Woodrow Wilson, who had vetoed the bill in December. The act provided for a literacy test and prohibited, amongst others, epileptics and contract laborers, from entering the country. The act was modified by the Immigration Act of 1924 and both were further revised in 1952 and eventually replaced by the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965.
In 2017 – The New England Patriots defeat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime in Super Bowl 51 at NRG Stadium in Houston. The Falcons led 28-3 in the third quarter and the 25-point comeback is the largest in Super Bowl history and the game remains the only Super Bowl to go to overtime. The national anthem was sung by Luke Bryan and Lady Gaga performed the halftime show.
Today – Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz, and the Cast of Encanto are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first week with We Don’t Talk About Bruno. It’s the first chart single for the ensemble – though not the first chart single for some of its members – making the ensemble the 15th act in the Hot 100 era to have their only chart single go to #1, though this could change if a follow-up hits the charts. The song is from the movie Encanto and has also gone to #1 in Ireland and Great Britain and the six credited singers is the most for a #1 song on the Hot 100.
