The long march to today.
In 1973 – President Richard Nixon agrees to surrender subpoenaed audio tapes of his Oval Office conversation to the Senate Watergate Committee. The tapes had first been subpoenaed in July and Nixon only turned them over after evasion and compromise had failed. The taping system had been installed in 1971 and disclosed the previous July by White House aide Alexander Butterfield during testimony before the US Senate. Nixon would hold on to the presidency until August 1974, when he resigned, still the only US president to do so.
In 1964 – The first gold medals in Olympic volleyball are awarded at the Tokyo Summer Games. Japan won the women’s gold medal, winning the six-team round-robin tournament with a 5-0 record over the 4-1 Soviet Union and the 3-2 Polish team. In the men’s tournament, the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia both finished 8-1 with the Soviets getting the gold medal based on defeating the Czechs on Oct 18. Beach volleyball became an Olympic sport in 1992.
In 1976 – Chicago is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with If You Leave Me Now. It was the 19th Top 40 hit for the group, their twelfth top 10 hits and their first of three #1 songs and the song also went to #1 in six other countries including South Africa and Great Britain. The song also won Grammy Awards for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) and for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus. In 1993 a version by Chess peaked at #67 in Germany.
