The long march to today.
In 1774 – The first US flag with the word “liberty” on it is adopted in Taunton, Massachusetts. It was a red flag with the British flag in the canton and the words “liberty” and “union” sewn on near the bottom. The original design of the flag is unknown, but the current rendition was adopted as Taunton’s city flag in 1974. It is also the city flag of Weymouth, New Jersey and was flown at the Jan 6 insurrection at the US Capitol.
In 1980 – The Philadelphia Phillies win their first World Series title, defeating the Kansas City Royals 4-2 in Game 6 at Veterans Stadium. Phillies third baseman Mike Schmidt was named the MVP of the series and this game, with 54.9 million viewers, remains the World Series’ most-watched game. The Phillies had entered the National League in 1883, had lost the World Series in 1950 and 1915 and won another one in 2008.
In 1972 – Chuck Berry is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with My Ding-a-Ling. The song also went to #1 in Ireland, Canada and Great Britian, peaked at #42 on Billboard’s soul chart and was Billboard’s 15th-biggest song of the year. Despite his popularity and influence over the years, this remains Berry’s only #1 pop hit. The song was written by Dave Bartholomew, whose 1952 release did not chart.
