The Diary of a Nobody/January 16

It’s Read Free Sunday. Enjoy today’s entry with our compliments.

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, January 15
Boy, I was lazy at the start of my shift at the hotel…It was before a sufficient level of caffeination had been achieved and I didn’t dive on the night’s labors until after midnight, after a sufficient level of caffeination had been achieved…And even after that yours truly was hardly moving with the highest possible level of alacrity and I wasn’t back from delivering folios until almost 0200.

Part of this was due to two factors: one, continuing a recent trend, there was trash in the hallway to move out and then while I was doing that some broad called me.

I don’t know why guests have been producing so much trash lately…As noted here seemingly every hour on the hour, ol’ Sparrow’s been knocking around hotels for more than a few years and I’ve never seen trash left out like this and this when we’re only half-full…Tonight, no less than four rooms left trash out for the Trash Fairy to magically carry away and there’s generally been some every night for the past month…It wasn’t all that hard to move, I merely took it to the nearest trash can, and it’s certainly reasonable to expect me to move it, because who wants to wake up in a trash dump???

Fortunately, there weren’t any room service trays to take back to the restaurant or yours truly might have been obliged to file a complaint for violation of the Night Auditor Agreement which states – all together now – that we are not asked to work too hard in exchange for showing up on time every night.

In the middle of hauling trash, the front desk mobile rang…It was a lady who said she made a reservation for next week but she was just funnin’ us because what she really meant was to make it for arrival tonight and could she change it???

That depends on who you reserved with…If you made it with one of our exciting online partners and already paid for it then no, I can’t because any changes, be it dates or an outright cancelation, have to be made thru them because you paid them and not us…As it was, she had made it through Google, which I hadn’t come across before, so I scooted back to the front to see what the deal was.

It turned out she merely reserved the room and didn’t pay for it, so I was able to change the dates, graciously telling her I was able to offer her the same rate she’d originally reserved at even tho it was higher than the rate for this weekend.

In news from around the small town, work has resumed on the new weed shop going up next door…They moved the snow out and dug out about three feet and put some boards up around the perimeter of the hole and there have been a couple of guys there most days farting around with this and that.

Our small town is looking for a fitness director, too…This might seem like an odd position for a town of less than two thousand to advertise, but recall when the gym closed last month there was a sign on the door advising the town now owned the weights and machines and regular readers of this crap may – or they may not – recall yours truly wondered if they might be headed to the community center going in at the old high school…This would seem to confirm that, tho I could be out to lunch on this,  and you don’t have to be Mr Fitness to surmise Ryan, who owned the gym, will put in for the position and eventually get it.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1500 Saturday until 2130 Saturday…6.5 hours for the day and 46.0 hours for the week, a bit below average but what are you going to do???

It was a hack of a rest, tho…The alarm went off and I felt great, perhaps because the last dream I remember was very pleasant, tho I forgot the specifics within a couple of minutes.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
