Today is the final day of Read Free Fortnight.
Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Sunday, October 25
It’s Assistant Front Desk Manager Q in a landslide in the reward club sign-up race for the month…Here are the latest figures:
Q: 62
Front Desk Manager Brandon: 22
Amy: 19
This isn’t even a contest anymore and Amy didn’t even bring the matter up when I reported for duty tonight…Of course, I didn’t either, out of respect.
We have been sold out for nine consecutive nights and 19 out of the last 20, outstanding for any offseason…Some rain and snow are expected Sunday and Monday, so perhaps the fire north of here will go out and we’ll get a proper off-season in before whatever passes a ski season hits…Officially, the mountain is scheduled to open on Thanksgiving, but you need snow for that and there isn’t any…Not only hasn’t Mother Nature not sent any snow yet (some is scheduled Sunday) but it’s been so warm during the day you couldn’t make any at night because it would melt because days are still warm.
Still slow even tho we’re sold out and I didn’t see anyone from the time Amy left until 0430, when that older gent came in for some coffee before heading off to hunt with his buddies…He was in yesterday morning at the same time, too, and he also buys a power bar for his morning meal and today be bought a second one for lunch…These are good nutrition as far as they go…They each only have a couple of hundred calories and I have some zero clue how he is going to get thru a full day of hunting with only two bars.
Because morning coffee service wasn’t up I’d asked if he wanted me to get the creamer out and he looked at me as if I’d asked him he wanted to dance, announcing he was “a black guy” which almost led me to trot out my coffee line on him…It’s tasteless and not appropriate for work in any circumstances, so I didn’t, but it did come to mind and bring a smile.
In the navy whenever someone went on a coffee run coffee was ordered black, blonde, bitter or sweet, depending on whether you wanted it with or without cream or with or without sugar…For example, a black cup of joe was black and bitter and one with cream and sugar was blonde and sweet and the joke was “I take my coffee like I take my women: black and bitter” or however you took your coffee and women…It’s great fun…Or was, om an old diesel submarine, though I’ve learned over the years that that is the only place it is found funny, so I tend to keep the line to myself.
(Although you could say “I take my coffee like I take my women…in a cup” which is harmless enuff and has the added benefit of making some zero sense.)
The big news is Luke – who brings his dog Z with him to work every day – bought her a new bed for use while she’s lounging at the front desk…It’s pretty big, big enuff so I half wanted to commandeer it for personal use and Luke said it cost him more than what he’s ever spent on a bed for himself and Brandon later said it cost over $300 which in my view means Luke isn’t spending a whole lot of money on his own bed and I bored Brandon with the story of my own bed, one of those sleep number deals that outlived its 20-year warranty last year…I paid $900 for it in 1999, about $1,400 in today’s money and some research showed the same bed costs $999 today, about $650 in 1999 dollars, so they’re actually less expensive now.
Several seasonal firsts are in the books, all due to the first big snow of the season: the first brushing of snow off the car, the first use of the heated mattress cover, the first driveway shoveling, the first waking up early for driveway shoveling (see Sleep Log below), the first leaving early for the hotel and the boot covers made their debut, as well.
I didn’t shovel the entire driveway, tho, just enough so I could back out…A good six inches fell at The Shire, enuff to justify using the snowblower, but it’s going to warm up later in the week, so I might just let it melt.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1530 Sunday until 2030 Sunday…5.0 hours for the day and the week.
Regular readers of this crap may – or they may not – recall this is the second consecutive week ol’ Sparrow’s slept Sunday afternoon instead of fall asleep in the morning…I recognized it early, too, and was up doing project work at 1000 instead of the usual noon or so and, and I got a lot of reading in and, as usual, it was a very pleasant afternoon until I fell asleep.
The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
