The Diary of a Nobody/October 24

What happens when Read Free Sunday (RFS) and Read Free Fortnight (RFF) collide? Well, you still you get to read this feature for nothing.

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, October 24
Still sold out but still off-season slow in terms of guests pestering ol’ Sparrow at the front desk…We’ve been mostly sold out since Labor Day, with a lot of them being people working the fire, but there’s no shortage of regular travelers, too and Q reported he was as busy as he’d ever been tonight…He said there were 24 vacancies when he came in and they were sold out by 1800, which is pretty busy even if some of the reservations are made online.

Being this busy is tuff…Your goal, of course, is to provide cordial, efficient service to whomever is standing in front of you…On the other hand, when there are several people waiting you want to be prompt, too, so you don’t want to dawdle but you don’t want to rush, either and for those just starting out in the front desk racket, a full lobby can present a challenge.

Sparrow reports for duty, tho, and BOOM everything quiets down…I like to think it’s my generally calming presence that does the trick but, of course, a lot of our guests are firefighters -and other workers – who sleep nights (the day-sleeping firefighters appear to be staying somewhere else, or maybe the fire stops at night) plus the bar closes well before I get there so there aren’t any drunks cluttering up the lobby.

140 came by this morning to get a half-off breakfast voucher for the restaurant and that sounded familiar and it turned out his roommate had been by earlier to get one…Ooopsies…Official hotel/restaurant policy dictates one coupon per room.

Why it’s one per room is not clear, it’s merely the way it is and while regular readers of this crap know my powers as night auditor are sweeping, they are not all-encompassing and yours truly is not in a position to change this because Rule 3 of the night audit racket – behind show up on time every night and don’t give those bastards on day shift a reason to wonder what you are doing – is don’t cost the company money…I am, of course, authorized to wing it, tho, so I told the gent a second coupon for 140 would be issued today, but this would be for today, only, tomorrow they’d have to share one.

It was a very strong weight session tonight, not super max weights, but what we normally get with good strength and better than Thursday’s workout.

It was dark so it was the Post Office Route for the walk…The big news is that the hangout place where the old diner used to be was open…Recall the diner closed about 18 months ago and a couple-three months ago a sign appeared in the window that The Block a “hangout” place would be coming soon…There wasn’t a whole lot of work seen being done on it, tho some might recall we did come across some kids trying to get a skateboard ramp thru a door, evidently without much success.

Well, the lights were on and a door was open and there were kids actually hanging out…The old overflow dining room had some sofas and a pool table and a computer work station and some refreshments and in what used to be the main dining room was a skateboard ramp and more TVs…The skateboard ramp was about as small as you’d expect a skateboard ramp crammed into an old diner’s dining room to be and while I’m hardly Mr Skateboarding it seemed pretty dull, but not only was it getting a workout there were a couple of kids lined up for it, too.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0900 Saturday until 1530 Saturday…6.5 hours for the day and 46.5 hours for the week, a good total, the third-highest weekly average of the month and 4.0 hours more than last week.

I could have, perhaps, issued a Patented Sparrow Rollover (PSR) and gotten a couple of more hours in but regular readers of this crap know a 1530 wakeup for the Saturday Sleep Session (SSS) lays the foundation for a good day: a proper morning routine, project work, workout, walk and usually with time left over for some reading before heading into the hotel.

This also generally ensures a quality  Sunday Sleep Session (SSS), because ol’ Sparrow is good and tired when he gets home Sunday morning tho this does not guarantee a good Sunday Sleep Session (SSS) because sometimes we don’t get to sleep until the afternoon.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
